facilities.

If
your centre is no-longer competitive against modern private
sector facilities nearby and you want to provide up-to-date
facilities conforming to current performance standards,
then talk to Continental about a refurbishment project
- we can help you increase your revenue by improving your
facility.
The
refurbishment of South Reading Leisure Centre - a case study
The images
below show what is possible from a full refurbishment. South
Reading Leisure Centre was in a poor state of repair with
facilities below current expected standards. The centre obtained
£600,000 sponsorship from Barclays Bank's "Places
for Sport" scheme for a complete refurbishment and following
the completion of the project, is now managed by the neighbouring
Madejski Academy and operates as "Academy Sport".

The
image to the left shows the dance studio before refurbishment.
The old timber floor is worn and is un-sprung providing
an unforgiving surface for dance and aerobics. The few
mirrors are not tall enough for current standards and
the decoration is patchy and requires updating. |
| The
image to the right shows the same room after Continental's
refurbishment works. The floor is now a Junckers SylvaSport
premium grade beech floor with a High Performance sports
seal, providing a modern sprung floor. The room has been
re-decorated and Continental installed new posture mirrors
providing a modern, clean, attractive room. |

The
image to the left shows the sports hall before Continental's
works. The old Granwood floor is worn and in poor condition.
It has been patched and repaired noticeably over the years
leaving differently coloured areas. |
The
image to the right shows the sports hall after the completion
of Continental's works. The floor is now a High Performance
Junckers SylvaSport beech floor on a UnoBat50 sprung
undercarriage which exceeds all current performance
requirements, and has been line marked using governing
body compliant colours and court sizes.

Before - sports equipment
 |
The
image to the left shows the sports hall before Continental's
works. The netting is tattered and worn with the division
nets resting on the floor, and the basketball goals are
no longer current standard size and specification. The
original basketball goals were badly installed and the
cricket netting clashes with the goals, having damaged
the nets rendering them unusable. |
The
image to the right shows the sports hall after the completion
of Continental's works. The netting and trackway has
all been replaced and the matchplay basketball goals
have been replaced with higher specification electrically
operated perspex goals with the now necessary backboard
padding. The practice basketball goals are now height
adjustable goals enabling the centre's aims to be more
inclusive for the local community. |

Following
the recent opening of the facility by John Madejski (see the
images below showing the opening), Catherine Shaw, Principal
at The John Madejski Academy, said: “The investment
from all partners has provided a first rate facility for the
whole community. It will become a training area for our young
sports stars and is now better equipped to meet everyone’s
needs. We hope more and more local residents will make use
of the centre and benefit from the new facilities and programmes
on offer.”
Catherine
Wilton, Lead Councillor for Culture and Sport at Reading Borough
Council, said: “It is fantastic to see this facility
come to fruition and I’m particularly delighted about
the community facilities on offer for local sport enthusiasts.
This is something that Reading Borough Council, in partnership
with both the Academy and Barclays, have been striving for.
Young people particularly need to get actively involved in
sport and this new with its high quality sports and leisure
facilities will certainly help.”
The entire
refurbishment of the sports hall and dance studio shown above
including rip-out and disposal of all equipment, cleaning,
re-decorating, installation of secondary steelwork, installation
of 3-phase power for the basketball goals, installation and
line marking on the floors and the installation of all sports
equipment was completed exactly on budget and on time, taking
just 6 weeks from the planned closure of the centre to the
re-opening, therefore minimising revenue loss to the centre
and keeping disruption of classes and teams to a minimum.
