Basketball...
Continental manufactures basketball goals in an endless
variety of options. We have been installing basketball
equipment throughout the UK for 40 years and have worked
with all roof structures, wall structures, standards
of intended use, layouts and can always provide you
with advise to suit your needs and your budget.
We
will not just sell you a "standard" product.
We take the time to understand your needs, discuss the
options, analyse the drawings of your hall and its roof
and wall structure, and only then will we provide a
firm quotation for the installation of the optimal equipment.
We
therefore need architectural plans of your hall, and
roof structure drawings before we can provide a quotation.
We want to avoid surprises for you later on - we want
to ensure what we quote for will work in your hall,
will not conflict with other equipment in the hall,
and can be installed safely without damaging your building
or putting the users at a safety risk. This may take
more time than other suppliers, but we consider it more
important to provide a firm price for the equipment
you want and that will work in your hall, rather than
to provide a "budget" quotation with surprises
later. We want you to benefit from our experience and
advice.
For
typical layouts, advice and technical information including
sizes, projections, support steelwork requirements,
electrical requirements and loadings etc. please refer
to the specifiers section of our website.

Roof
retractable system
Roof
retractable basketball goals are supported from
steelwork within the roof structure and are stored
within the roof. They are lowered by winch down
to the operational height.
All
goals are manufactured from heavy duty tubular
steelwork frames to accommodate the backboards.
Steelwork is epoxy powder coated in either grey
or white to your specification.
Options
include:
Hand
winch
- Each
goal operates independently from its own wall
mounted, ratcheted hand winch.
Electric
winch
- The
goals are arranged to operate simultaneously
as a pair from one roof mounted electronic winch.
We use only a 3-phase heavy duty electronic
motor to power the winch system. A 3-phase motor
is far more reliable than single-phase one,
will last longer and permits the micro-adjustment
required to ensure accurate operation. This
is a VERY low maintenance winch - we ensure
we do not have to return to winches we install
by ensuring they are as reliable as possible
from the outset. Click HERE
to download operating instructions for electrically
operated basketball goals.
Free
fall safety device
- Also
known as a load arrestor, this device (as illustrated)
operates in the unlikely event of a cable or
winch failure to prevent freefall of the goals.
We use a heavy duty, high specification load
arrestor which is more than suitable for the
requirements.
Board
type
- Almost
all roof retractable goals will use matchplay
size goals (1.8m x 1.05m). Board type can be
timber or perspex.
Ring
type
- Standard
basketball rings are fixed. However we also
offer pressure release - slam dunk - rings which
comply with F.I.B.A. and E.B.B.A specifications.
These can be fitted with the original installation
or can be self-installed at a later date.

The
above image shows an electrically winched
goal recently installed at South Reading
Lesiure Centre. This goal features perspex
backboard, slam-dunk ring, TuffGuard backboard
padding and has steelwork powder coated
in red to match the roof steelwork which
is also red. |

The
image above shows the heavy duty 3-phase
electric winch and gearbox that we use to
operate both basketball goals simultaneously.
This winch is VERY low maintenance and gives
many years of trouble free operation. |

The
above image shows the wall mounted control
panel for electrically operated goals. The
switchgear is very streamlined to reduce
the possibility of problems. |

The
above image shows the heavy duty load arrestor
available as an option for your basketball
goals. This item stops uncontrolled descent
of the goal in the extremely unlikely event
of catastrophic failure of the winch. |

Wall
hinged retractable system
Wall
mounted to fold away in either direction. Available
in projections from 0.6m up to 4m maximum (over
4m imparts an excessive loading on the wall and
we are normally unwilling to install such goals
due to the health and safety implications of the
fixings failing).
For
details and explanations of "standard"
projections please refer to the specifiers section
of our website. Stabiliser wires fixed to the
wall at high level are required on goals above
a projection of 3.5m to provide additional stability
when in use.
For
all projections of 1.2m and over a high-strength
magnetic keep bracket is incorporated to hold
the goal securely in the stored position when
the goal is not in use.
Options
include:
Fixed
height or height adjustable
- Fixed
height or adjustable height boards are available.
Adjustable height boards are suitable to provide
junior or mini basketball as well as competition
basketball - ring heights achieved by adjustable
height goals are 3.05m and 2.6m. (If height
adjustable is chosen, the maximum projection
that we advise is 2.2m)
Board
type
- Available
with either matchplay (1.8m x 1.05m) or practice
(1.2m x 0.9m) backboards. Matchplay can be timber
or perspex boards.
Ring
type
- Standard
basketball rings are fixed. However we also
offer pressure release - slam dunk - rings which
comply with F.I.B.A. and E.B.B.A specifications.
These can be fitted with the original installation
or can be self-installed at a later date.

as it suits a 28m long court in a 33m long
hall. These images show the stabiliser wires

3.5m |

The

The

goal on a standard projection bracket (typical
projections are 300mm, 450mm, 600mm and
1.2m) |

The
image above shows a fixed height practice
goal on a special projection bracket. As
we design and manufacture all our products
in-house, we can adapt our standard products
to suit your building. The above goal required
special brackets for a solid wall fixing
at the bottom of the goal and a fixing to
a vertical steel column at the top of the
goal. |

The
image above shows a height adjustable practice
goal on a 450mm projection bracket. The
steelwork is powder coated in red to match
the steelwork scheme in this hall. We offer
steelwork in a range of six colours as standard
or in any RAL number to order. |

The
images above and below show height adjustable
practice basketball goals in their lowered
position enabling smaller children to enjoy
drills, small side games and shooting practice. |

Basketball
backboard padding - TuffGuard® "bolt-on"
padding
It
is a rule of the game of basketball that Matchplay
backboards must be padded. (FIBA Official Basketball
Rules 2004, Rule 6)
We
strongly recommend that backboard padding is therefore
specified for all matchplay goals both in order
to comply with the rules of the sport and on health
and safety grounds.
If
your backboards are padded according to the official
rules, then injuries caused by contact with the
board are less likely to arise and any subsequent
claims arising from injury can be defended by
highlighting full compliance with the rules set
down by the worldwide governing body.
Continental
Sports TuffGuard® padding is physically attached
to the board and supporting framework using eight
hidden bolts to ensure it cannot become detached
from the board. Other companies supply padding
that is attached using contact adhesive which
can fail, bringing play to a halt and requiring
remedial action to re-attach the padding.
Continental
TuffGuard® padding is manufactured from moulded
polyurethane foam incorporating integral steel
plates actually buried within the pad through
which the fixing bolts pass to attach the pad
securely to the backboard or supporting steel
framework.
Continental
TuffGuard® padding is supplied in red to act
as a visual warning, and is available to suit
all Matchplay timber and Perspex backboards (not
just those manufactured by Continental Sports).
Please specify your board type when ordering as
we supply bespoke fixings and bracketry to suit
your board type.
The
padding is available complete with instructions
for self-install onto existing backboards or can
be attached to your backboards by Continental's
installation engineers at an additional site visit
charge (the site visit charge does not apply to
padding supplied with new goals that we are installing
in your facility).
